The Arts: Art in the Streets - LA's MOCA

"Art in the Streets"

Spontaneity and creativity of people in life, outside the museum.

Although the exhibit has ended at Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Arts, check out this video to get a glimpse of the most amazing art found on the streets.  This was the first exhibit at a major U.S. museum to ever showcase graffiti and street art from the 1970's to today's global movement.

The ICE CREAM TRUCK is pretty cool!
Art in The Streets : Los Angeles from Juan Enriquez on Vimeo.

Like "Savage Beauty" is to MoMA, Art in the Streets was a major and most critiqued exhibit brought once again to MOCA.  Which I had know earlier so I can visit.

If you are in Brooklyn, you are in luck.  This exhibit is traveling to Brooklyn Museum on view from March 30 - July 8, 2012.

The Know: Urban Outfitters Deisgned by Pratt Institute

Summer times for most college kids across the U.S. means sleeping in and no cramming for finals.  But for nine Pratt Institute students they spent their summer days competing to design a winning dress for Urban Outfitters.

Six weeks passed and each participants have had the chance to present their sketches and creations to the UO dress buying team.  Dress buyer Robbin Choi and executive design director Gayle Smith picked the three winning designs now available on Urban Outfitters for fall.

Check them out at Urban Outfitters....

My favorite is the long, black jersey maxi dress.  It was designed by Simone Kurland for Silence & Noise.  I love the simplicity and elegance of it.  You can dress it up for night time or down for the day, just like how the model is wearing hers in the pic. above.

Robbin say it best below....

"I think each student really considered the wearability of the garments while making sure that they are all unique," Robbin says. "They are all dresses that can flip the switch from day to night, depending on how the girl wears it. I can't wait for these to get into stores."

The Random: Covert Lipstick Knife

So you're a night owl and loves the nightlife... every get a little nervous though as you stroll from your car to the poppin' lounge? Well, worry no more! Grab yourself a Lipstick Knife!  Check out this product from TruesWords.

The Crave: Posh's Dress

Oh man, the biggest Posh craving for this fall is the look up top.  After some searching the perfect dress has been located.  This buttoned dress in winter red from ASOS.com is a closet staple for the ladies.  So clean, fresh and office friendly!

Found the above booties on Amazon.com via Shop Style.  It is cute but not sure if I love it yet.  But for sure I will be getting the dress and wearing them with the Vince Camuto leopard booties.

The Know: Club Monaco Vintage Military Jacket

From The Style File, this cute and done-up vintage military jacket will be the next big thing.  Club Monaco has hit the streets of Portobello Market, grabbed up crazy vintage military inspired wear, and cut them up into cute and modern staples.  These will go about $149-$199 in select US Stores so if you live in LA or NYC, can you get me one please?

The Spot: Yotel NYC

This Time Square Yotel Hotel is fantastic.  Yes, the space is pretty small but it is strategically well designed.  A little more privacy between the sleeping are and the bathroom would be nice.  But I expected this simple modernity so it didn't bother me as much as others.  The bed was a bit hard though.... LOVE how it retracts into a sitting bed.

The view from our room was grate... sort of bay front.  The location is not bad either, about four blocks from Times Square and Metro stations.  Very close to the Port Authority bus stop too so you can get on shuttles to the airport.  Especially if flew into Newark, there is an air conditioned coach that takes you straight to it for just $15!

This Yobot stores your stuff!

The Crave: Torn by Ronny Kobo Sharon Long Dress - as seen on Rihanna

If this was not $270 I would have it in my collection.... love love how Rihanna paired it with tasseled loafers.  A nice twist on a simple dress.  The cutouts are perfection.

Check out more pictures and buy at Singer22.com

The Random: "Ninjas Killed My Family..."

Strolling Wall Street and quickly snapped this photographed picture of a homeless man with a very convincing story....

The Music: Maroon 5 "Misery"

He is so cute!!!

The Artist: Salvatore Ferragamo

"The Michelangelo of Shoe Designers"

Little is mentioned of Salvatore's influence to the shoe making industry.  Thanks to him, we have the cork and wooden wedges so famously loved and worn today.

Born to a poor family in Bonito near Naples, Italy, at the age of nine Salvatore designed his first shoe.  After some apprenticeship he established his first workshop at twelve.  In 1914, he immigrated to Boston to learn about machine production methods.  After a while, he moved to California and opened a shoe repair shop in Santa Barbara and began his relationship with Hollywood film studios.

Soon, the Ferragamo name became synonymous to movie starlets.  Ferragmo began making shoes to the stars like Rudolph Valentino, Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, Joan Crawford, and Gloria Swanson.  To further his understanding of anatomy, he enrolled at UCLA.  With this newly acquired knowledge, he revolutionized the shoe making concept that resulted with comfortable as well as original and attractive shoe designs.

In 1927, Ferragamo decided to move back to Italy in because he felt that is where the most skilled shoe makers and the best materials are most available.  In Florence, Ferragamo established his first shop in Europe. Despite some poor investments, over aggressiveness in his expansion, and the crash of 1929 Ferragamo was able to keep is shop running and by 1950 he had regained momentum with over 700 employees.  By then he had to use machinery to help with production but each items were and are still finished by hand.

It was Ferragamo who invented the "orthopedic wedges" from cork and used transparent paper with raffia to create invisible sandals.  All became quite fashionable.

The picture to the left here is Ferragamo's platform sandal and heel that is covered with colored suede, 1938.

Look familiar? Check out today's design by Jeffrey Campbell, pictured below.
